Outdoor

Gnosjö municipality may be small, but despite that there are 111 lakes and many opportunities to discover different natural environments. Our biggest destination is of course our national park - Store Mosse. Southern Sweden's largest marshland area attracts many. Below you can find even more areas and things to do that are connected to outdoor life.

Store Mosse National Park

A Wilderness Adventure in Southern Sweden Store Mosse National Park offers an extraordinary experience for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. Established in 1982, it is the only national park in the region and covers nearly 8,000 hectares. It has become a popular destination for adventurous visitors from Sweden, the Nordic countries, and all over Northern Europe. Welcome to a nature-filled adventure unlike anything else – where peace and wild beauty go hand in hand. The main reason to visit Store Mosse is to explore the park’s extensive network of hiking trails. With around 50 kilometers of well-marked paths, you can enjoy sweeping views across the vast bogland – the largest south of Lapland. For less experienced hikers or families, we recommend Wibecksleden and Svartgölsleden, two short and accessible trails of 1.6 km and 3.6 km (round trip). Both are wheelchair- and stroller-friendly, making it possible for everyone to experience the magic of the moss. Looking for more of a challenge? Try Kävsjön runt, a 12 km loop that takes you deep into the heart of the park. Make sure to wear comfortable hiking shoes and bring water and a packed lunch – the full walk takes around four hours. And this is just the beginning – many more trails are waiting to be discovered. Visit storemosse.se or explore additional trail tips right here on Visit Gnosjö. Want to experience the park in a new way? Join a guided snowshoe hike with naturum during winter – a truly unique adventure that’s perfect for families and friends. Store Mosse works closely with several passionate local guides. One of them is “Vandra med André”, who offers guided hikes in English, and especially German – perfect for our many German-speaking guests. Another is “Vandra med Ulrika”, who combines hiking with outdoor cooking based on ingredients from the wild. And yes – food always tastes better outside! Speaking of outdoor food experiences, keep an eye out for Utmark Sverige’s coffee hikes – where you'll enjoy freshly brewed coffee over an open fire in the middle of nature. Simply unforgettable. Don’t miss a visit to naturum, the park’s visitor center. Discover engaging exhibitions about the park’s rich nature and history, and look out across the bog through panoramic windows equipped with binoculars. You might spot cranes, eagles, moose, and wading birds. Please note: during summer, the parking lot at naturum can fill up. Consider using one of the park’s other entrances instead. Also, overnight parking for motorhomes is not allowed at naturum. Store Mosse National Park is waiting to be explored. Every step is an adventure, and every moment brings you closer to nature. You are welcome all year round – whether you walk on your own or join a guided tour with one of the dedicated local guides who help bring this natural wonder to life.

A rich life of birds

In Gnosjö there are several places where you as a birdwatcher can take part in birdlife. Perhaps the most famous place is Kävsjön in Store Mosse National Park. Store Mosse has a very rich birdlife. The great snipe is the symbol of the national park and represents the park well as it is frequently seen on the swing outside the visitor center. Slightly less common are the little snipe and the little snipe. Something a little more grandiose, however, are our golden and white-tailed eagles that are seen in the park from time to time. During the period November-March, the eagles feed and are therefore seen more often during this period. There is a webcam set up where you can see the feeding site live and there is a good chance that the eagles will come by. During the spring, the cranes come to visit on their journey north and Store Mosse is an obvious resting place for them. Some stay in the area but most move on. Visiting the park during this time is almost magical as you can even hear the grouse playing in some places. More centrally in Gnosjö is the hiking trail along Gåröström where you can look for both herons and kingfishers. At the southern end of the trail is Hylténs Industrial Museum, where you can gain an insight into Gnosjö's rich history. Bird tower Bird towers are located at the main entrance, Hagudden, Kvarnö and along the trail between the visitor center and Andersberg in the southern part of the national park. Since the national park has a rich birdlife, it is recommended to check extra carefully before your visit so that you actually have packed your binoculars.  The large bird tower at the visitor center is also accessible for wheelchairs, walkers and strollers.

Have you ever tried forest bathing?

Immerse yourself in a quiet, sensory retreat with forest bathing (Shinrin‑yoku) in the Töllstorp recreational area. Five specially designed “forest-bathing” spots line the scenic Töllstorpasjön loop, marked in yellow and white-green-white. Just a short detour from the main trail, each feature offers benches where you can sit, close your eyes, and let nature's calm wash over you.

The Right of Public Access

Fishing in Gnosjö

Fishing in the Gnosjö region offers a variety of fishing waters that are perfect for all types of sport fishing enthusiasts. In the municipality alone, we have 111 lakes and there are more in our neighboring municipalities. The Gnosjö region with its many lakes, rivers and streams is home to a wide range of fish species. Whether you are an experienced fisherman or a beginner, you will be able to enjoy exciting and challenging fishing in these waters. Many watercourses are often less explored and less crowded, which provides a more intimate and secluded fishing experience. Here you can encounter species such as perch, zander, roach and pike. Fishing license Fishing in the Gnosjö region usually requires a fishing license, which can be purchased at various locations near the fishing waters, such as Karins Lanthandel in Kulltorp. It is important to respect the fishing regulations and take nature into account in order to preserve the fish population and its habitat. The easiest way to see which lakes you are allowed to fish in is through iFiske, where you can also buy fishing licenses digitally for many of the lakes in the region. Don't forget that when you are out in nature, the Right of Public Access applies, which means freedom but also consideration and responsibility for those of you who are out in the open.
